Tomato Achaar (Add-On)

40 items left

Brooklyn Delhi's Tomato Achaar is a condiment made with locally-grown tomatoes, tamarind, a mix of Indian spices, red chili powder, unrefined cane sugar and sesame oil.  It has a savory, spicy and tangy flavor.  Use it just like you would Sriracha or harissa.

Traditionally it's eaten with rice, curry, dal and yogurt, but you can top it on most anything - eggs, sandwiches, grilled meats, noodles or even cook with it by adding it to lentils, soups, salad dressings. Mix it into mayo for dipping fries in or into guacamole to go with chips.

  • Handcrafted in small batches in NY
  • Vegan, Gluten-Free, Wholesome Ingredients, No Artificial Preservatives.
  • Ingredients: locally grown tomatoes, sesame oil, expeller pressed canola oil, garlic, salt, red chili powder, tamarind, spices (black mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, turmeric, asafetida), unrefined sugar cane
  • 12 oz
  • Your item will be ready the week after your order is placed. If you are a Local Roots member, this item will be included in next week’s regular weekly harvest. Of course, the exact day will depend on your regular Local Roots market or delivery day. You will also receive a confirmation email specifying the date of pickup or delivery after purchase.

The Problem

Most mass-produced Indian pickles on the market are made with conventionally grown ingredients. Some use preservatives to extend shelf-stability, especially those that are imported from abroad.

Usually achaar is really spicy and really salty, which means you don’t eat a lot of it.

Our Food Fix

Brooklyn Delhi recipe highlights the flavor of the vegetables and fruits and aromatic spices (that are also very healthy!), along with the chilies so it’s not all about burning your tongue off and raising your blood pressure. They use locally-grown ingredients where possible, and all recipes are made by chef and cookbook author Chitra Agrawal, who travels back to India each year to visit family and gain inspiration.
